Sol y Sombra (Sun and Shadow) is an artistic photography series that uses the movement of the sun and its changing effects on shadows to create unique images of shadows at particular instants in time. The photos are taken in favorite locations and pay homage to the woman of today and all time without regard to age, race or social status. The simplicity and directness of the images allow for immediate connection with the viewer.
The creator of Sol y Sombra, Lourdes Phend, was born and raised in Colombia and currently splits her time between Houston, Texas and Oconomowoc, Wisconsin, where many of the photos were taken. In the last 35 years she has lived on 5 continents and traveled extensively. Experiencing different cultures and appreciating the various forms of artistic expression have broadened her view of the world and provided inspiration for her work.
